  Lisle

Residents of this Chicago suburb are proud to call the place home, especially since Lisle was recently ranked number 20 in Money Magazine’s roster of “100 Best Places to Live” (July 2007). With a growing community and bustling downtown scene, it’s easy to see why this Illinois city made the list.

The Village of Lisle is at the crossroads of two major interstates in the heart of DuPage County's High Tech Corridor - about 26 miles west of Chicago. Lisle offers an ideal setting for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Lisle holds the title as the oldest town in the county and was first settled in the fall of 1830.  The burial sites of many of the area's earliest settlers are in the Lisle Cemetery.

In 1839, DuPage County was organized and set apart from Cook County. DuPage County was geographically divided into nine townships, with Lisle Township the south central one. This town was previously called Du Page, because of the river which runs through it. As there was already a town with the same name, it was given the name of Lisle in 1850, in honor of S. Lisle Smith, of Chicago. Railroad transportation became available in Lisle in 1864 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad completed its tracks from Chicago to Aurora.

The historic heart of Lisle is its 5 block central business district. Downtown Lisle features a variety of businesses including shops, restaurants, service-oriented stores and professional offices.

Lisle is full of family friendly events, including its annual “Eyes to the Skies” Fourth of July festival. This patriotic affair is packed with fun activities, food, crafts, a parade, and, of course, fireworks! Eyes to the Skies has gained so much popularity over the years, that the event now draws in national musical entertainers. Past guests have included country star Blake Shelton, legendary rock group Kansas and American Idol finalist Bucky Covington.

Several new multi-family residential developments and government institutions-including Village Hall - are also located in the downtown area. Revitalization of the downtown area began in 1998, and the construction of a new Village Hall frees up valuable real estate for redevelopment. There are also new developments have begun a little further out as well.

Speaking of pop stars, part of musical artist Gwen Stefani’s hit single “Wind it Up” was filmed at Lisle’s very own Morton Arboretum. This 1,700-acre outdoor locale boasts miles of lush green gardens with plants and trees from a diverse mix of geographical areas. The Arboretum is a great place to work off some calories or just get some fresh air with its 14 miles of hiking trails and large expanses of natural wilderness. Of course, you could always just take a serene, scenic drive along its winding nine-mile-long roadway. There’s even a little something for the kids here with the four-acre interactive Children’s Garden and one-acre Maze Garden. Plus, year-round education programs in horticulture, natural history, botanical art, nature photography and ornithology are offered for both children and adults at the Morton Arboretum.

Located on the Arboretum’s eastside is the Sterling Morton Library designed by famed Chicago architect Harry Weese. The building features curved cherry bookcases, glass shelves and an intimate garden. But the real attraction here is its 28,000 volumes including 800 journal titles and 5,000 rare books with one of the earliest works published in 1482. There are also 12,000 items in the library’s art collection including engravings, lithographs and watercolors.

Lisle’s plentiful wetlands and abundance of shady trees provide a beautiful natural backdrop for its many residential pockets. Sprawling million-dollar new constructions and traditional Prairie-style brick homes dot the neighborhoods on lush lots surrounded by privacy hedges and thick greenery. You can also find lavish Arboretum cottages housed within gated communities and contemporary architecture tucked in quiet cul-de-sacs. Newer houses include modern amenities that are standard in today’s residential designs, such as granite counters, stainless steel appliances, en suite master baths with Jacuzzi tubs and marble tiling, radiant heated floors and other state-of-the-art finishes. Lisle also has an inventory of one- and two-bedroom condos, some with private decks and park views, for between $100,000 and $350,000.

Today, Lisle is called the "heart of the Silicon Prairie." It is the site of many high-tech industries, several of these include: Lucent Technologies, Computer Associates, and AT&T. Lisle's reputation for new technology is further enhanced by a community-wide network linking many sites throughout the Village.
